Brisbane is a city with plenty going on. There’s everything from comedy and music, to art, botanical gardens and wineries. Why not head over to the Brisbane Powerhouse, an art and cultural hub, located in a former power station, which offers everything from musical showcases to art exhibits and performance art. The South Bank Parklands are also good for local events, with markets, music and food festivals happening throughout the year. If you really want to feel part of the community, head to The Gabba or Suncorp Stadium and join in cheering for the home side in a range of sports including cricket, rugby and football. Alternatively, if a round of golf is more your sport, Brisbane has a few, with Victoria Park being our favourite, located right in the heart of the city. If it’s views you’re after, why not enjoy a walk up Mount Cook-tha, or a leisurely cruise along the Brisbane River? If you’ve got a few days, why not hop on board a ferry to North Stradbroke Island for fishing and whale watching, or take a drive to Mount Tambourine Rainforest. There is also the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast resorts nearby, both famed for their beaches, with the former offering amusement parks and shopping, and the latter, a quieter vibe with the famous Eumundi Markets.
If you’re in the city, and looking for a bite to eat, the choice is vast. Brisbane enjoys a multicultural population, so there’s plenty of Chinese and Thai food on offer, as well as your classic Aussie favourites. For the best steak in Brisbane, head to Moo Moo Wine Bar & Grill whose tag line, ‘a rare steak restaurant, well done’, sums them up perfectly. Alternatively, if the coastline is inspiring your dining choices, try George’s Paragon for great seafood with views out over the river. For Asian cuisine, we recommend Jade Buddha, again with great views over the Brisbane River, and there’s also Alchemy Restaurant & Bar and Stokehouse Q for innovative and modern takes on classic dishes. If you want to skip the main course and head straight for dessert, try Cowch, famed for its fancy puddings and elegant cocktails.
For a little retail therapy, the Queen Street Mall has everything you need to give your credit card a proper work out. From sprawling department stores to designer boutiques and everything in between, there’s enough here to keep you busy for the day. If it’s just designer stores you’re after, James Street offers all your high-end fashion stores, as well as eateries and cafés for a quick mid-shop pick-me-up.
Whether you’re looking for an opulent hotel, chic apartment or relaxing retreat, Brisbane and the surrounding area has something to offer. Many travellers looking for luxury choose to stay in the Treasury Casino due to its central location and stunning aesthetic. This is old-school luxury, with high ceilings, lavish décor and plenty of charm. There is a casino side to this hotel, so for a quiet stay, ask for a room on the other side. The Meriton Apartments are another popular choice and can be found in many of Australia’s larger cities. They are well designed, with all the modern conveniences you’d expect to find in a chic city apartment. They also come with access to leisure facilities, including a pool, gym and sauna. Songbirds Rainforest Retreat is located a short drive out of Brisbane, but is ideal if you’re looking for somewhere to unwind, with easy access to both the city, and the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise. Here you can relax in your villa, enjoy the soothing spa, have a private yoga class and enjoy organic, home grown cuisine in the restaurant.
